The Montreal Canadians are the one of the most successful franchises in the history of hockey and in the history of many sports.

They have 24 Stanley Cup since the team began. Most of the teams in the NHL these days haven’t even won the cup once. They even won a Stanley Cup before the NHL even existed in 1916. The teams Playoff win in 1992-93 is the last time that a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. A few teams have come close in recent years, including the Edmonton Oilers but none have won the Cup since the Habs.

The Name

Habs is another name for the team. People call the Montreal Canadiens by many names. They include:

Les Canadiens

Le Canadien

La Sainte-Flanelle

Le Bleu-Blanc-et-Rouge

Nos Glorieux

Les Glorieux

Les Grand Club

Les Habitants

The Montreal Canadiens were among the very first teams in the National Hockey League. These teams were known as the Original Six and include the Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers. The Canadians were founded in 1909 and were a charter member of the National Hockey League in 1917.

The team currently plays from the Bell Centre in Montreal. Before 2003, the arena was known as the Molson Centre and the Canadiens have also played at Montreal Westmount Arena, Mount Royal Arena, Jubilee Rink, and the Montreal Forum. All of the arenas have a rich hockey history for Canadiens and especially Montreal Canadiens’ fans. Of those arenas, the Forum is the one that sticks most with people because the Habs played seven decades of hockey there and won most of their Stanley Cups in the arena.

Hall of Famers

The team has a pretty impressive list of Hall of Famers. A few of which are listed below:

George Vezina

Joe Malone

Rocket Richard

Toe Blake

Jean Beliveau

Boom Boom Geoffrion

Jacques Plante

Gump Worsley

Henri Richard

Frank Mahavolich

Ken Dryden

Guy Lafleur

Larry Robinson

Patrick Roy

The list could go on and on. The team has been the home of many great NHL stars.

Logo

The C and H of the Canadians logo is one sport’s oldest logos. It has been around for most of hockey lengthy history and has been worn by children, NHLers, and average Joes throughout the world.

The colour are important to the history of the French in the region. A passage of a poem about the Habs jersey is even written on a Canadian five dollar bill.

The H on the logo stands for hockey although many people think it stands for Habitants.
